About this artwork

Eugène Atget's 1925 photograph looks at a street corner in Montmartre where the rue de l'Abreuvoir meets the rue des Saules. The cobbles are empty of people, and a weathered house marked 'Maison Rose' sits in the foreground, with stone buildings rising behind it. The image has a warm sepia tone. Atget was a French pioneer of documentary photography who set out to record the architecture and street scenes of Paris before modernisation changed them. Quiet corners like this one were typical of that work.

On your wall: Suits a study, hallway or living room, where its sepia tones and quiet Paris street scene sit well with books, wood and softly lit, understated interiors.

About Eugène Atget

Eugène Atget was a French photographer and self-styled flâneur who set out to record the architecture and street scenes of Paris before modernisation swept them away. He sold his pictures to artists and craftspeople, and later inspired the surrealists. Berenice Abbott first published most of his photographs after his death, when his reputation began to grow.
