This botanical plate by Pierre-Joseph Redouté shows a red Bengal rose, labelled Rosa Indica Cruenta and, in French, Rosier du Bengale. The flower is shown together with its buds and leaves, so the whole habit of the plant can be studied at a glance. Redouté was a painter and botanist, and his work on roses and other flowers is admired for its precision and delicacy. The lettering beneath the image names him as the painter, and the plate also credits the engraver Langlois and the printer Rémond.
On your wall: Its deep red bloom and fresh green foliage suit a dining room, hallway, study or quiet bedroom, particularly where a classic botanical note is wanted.

Pierre-Joseph Redouté was a painter and botanist from the Austrian Netherlands. He is best known for his watercolours of roses, lilies and other flowers, painted at the Château de Malmaison. Many were published as large coloured stipple engravings. Admirers nicknamed him "the Raphael of flowers", and he has often been ranked among the finest botanical illustrators.
