About this artwork

Arthur Dove painted Landscape at Cagnes in 1909, working in oil on canvas. The work measures 18 by 22 inches, a comfortable, human scale, and belongs to the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art. Dove is an early American modernist, often considered the first American abstract painter, and he went on to explore abstraction and abstract landscape through a wide range of materials and methods. This painting is a landscape by genre, and it sits near the start of that path.

On your wall: A good fit for a study, hallway or living room where a modern, abstract-minded piece in the landscape tradition would add quiet interest.

About Arthur Dove

Arthur Dove was an American artist and an early American modernist, often considered the first American abstract painter. He worked in a wide range of media, sometimes combining them in unconventional ways, to create abstractions and abstract landscapes. He also made experimental collages in the 1920s, and Me and the Moon, from 1937, is a fine example of his landscapes.
