Arthur Dove painted Huntington Harbor I in 1926, and it now belongs to The Phillips Collection in Washington. Dove is often regarded as the first American abstract painter and an early American modernist. He moved freely between media and often combined them in unexpected ways, shaping abstractions and abstract landscapes. In the 1920s he also made a series of experimental collages. This work comes from that inventive decade of his career, and it rewards a slow look.
On your wall: Its modern, abstract character suits a living room, study or hallway where you want a thoughtful piece that brings quiet interest to the space.

Arthur Dove was an American artist and an early American modernist, often considered the first American abstract painter. He worked in a wide range of media, sometimes combining them in unconventional ways, to create abstractions and abstract landscapes. He also made experimental collages in the 1920s, and Me and the Moon, from 1937, is a fine example of his landscapes.
