Painted in 1906, The Loam Pit is an oil painting on cardboard by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. The title points to an excavated pit of loam, and that working landscape is the subject. Kirchner was a German Expressionist painter and printmaker, and one of the founders of the artists' group Die Brücke, "The Bridge", which helped lead to the foundation of Expressionism in twentieth-century art. This work belongs to the collection of the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, where it is held today. Cardboard is a modest, direct support, and it suits a small, immediate study of an earthy place.
On your wall: Its earthy subject suits studies, living rooms and hallways where a modern, expressive landscape can bring some energy without overwhelming the space.

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner was a German Expressionist painter and printmaker. He was among the founders of Die Brücke, or "The Bridge", a group that helped lead the way to Expressionism in twentieth-century art. After a breakdown during the First World War he left army service. In 1937 the Nazis condemned his work as "degenerate", and over 600 pieces were sold or destroyed.
