Arthur Dove made this work in pastel around 1911 to 1912. The title tells us it is based on leaf forms and the spaces between them, so the subject is drawn from nature but is not a literal picture of a leaf. Dove is often considered the first American abstract painter, and this early piece sits within that story of an artist moving towards abstraction. The original no longer exists, which makes the image all the more worth having in front of you.
On your wall: Its abstract, nature-inspired subject suits a study, living room or hallway where a modern, quietly thoughtful piece is wanted.

Arthur Dove was an American artist and an early American modernist, often considered the first American abstract painter. He worked in a wide range of media, sometimes combining them in unconventional ways, to create abstractions and abstract landscapes. He also made experimental collages in the 1920s, and Me and the Moon, from 1937, is a fine example of his landscapes.
