Edvard Munch painted this landscape in 1899, working in casein paint on canvas. Casein is a milk-based paint, and it gives a surface quite different from the oils many painters of the period used. The work belongs to the Munch Museum, which holds a large share of the Norwegian artist's output. Munch is best known for The Scream of 1893, yet a landscape like this shows another side of his practice, turning to the natural world as a subject in its own right.
On your wall: A landscape like this suits living rooms, studies and quiet corners where a calm view of nature adds depth to a modern or minimal space.

Edvard Munch was a Norwegian painter. His best-known work, The Scream, dates from 1893 and has become one of the most recognised and admired images in Western art. If you are drawn to bold, expressive pictures that stay in the memory, his work is a rewarding place to begin.
