About this artwork

Burkhard Mangold designed this poster, titled Marque PKZ, in 1910 as an advertisement for PKZ, the Swiss brand. It belongs to a group of Swiss posters from around 1909 and 1910, and it draws on the winter sports theme, with a sled at the heart of the subject. Posters like this were made to catch the eye in the street, so the composition is direct and easy to read at a glance. It offers a pleasing glimpse of how Swiss advertising looked in the early twentieth century, and of how winter pastimes were used to promote everyday goods.
