Henri Privat-Livemont designed this poster in 1897 to advertise Bitter Oriental, an alcoholic drink. It belongs to the Belgian poster tradition of the late nineteenth century and shows the Art Nouveau taste for ornamental lettering that is part of the picture rather than an afterthought. A woman is the central figure, presented in an Orientalist spirit, a fashionable theme in Western art of the period. Privat-Livemont was a Belgian painter and decorator working in the Art Nouveau manner, and the poster shows how that decorative approach could serve everyday advertising.
On your wall: It suits a dining room, a kitchen, a home bar or a study, where its vintage advertising character and decorative lettering can add period charm.
