This is Plate 53 from The North American Sylva, showing Magnolia acuminata, known as the cucumber tree. Pancrace Bessa made it in 1819 as a hand-coloured botanical illustration. A single large leaf sits beside a white flower and a green fruit cone, from which red seeds emerge. The plate carries its printed caption, naming the tree in both its common and botanical forms. Bessa was a French natural history artist trained under Gerard van Spaendonck, and his plates are known for their detailed, delicate handling of plants.
On your wall: Its soft greens, white bloom and touches of red suit a study, hallway, kitchen or bedroom, especially alongside other botanical prints or natural wood.
