About this artwork

This is plate 38 from The North American Sylva, an engraving of a pignut hickory branch, Carya glabra. The branch carries compound leaves, and the nuts appear both in their husks and freed from them, so the viewer can see the fruit at different stages. The plate is hand-coloured and carries the caption Pig Nut Hickory, along with the older botanical name Juglans porcina. Pancrace Bessa was a French natural history artist known for his botanical illustrations, and his careful, delicate approach suits a subject like this one.

On your wall: Its natural greens and browns suit a study, hallway, kitchen or dining room, and it sits well in a group of botanical prints or in a traditional, calm interior.
