Painted in 1927, Historical Site is an abstract work by Paul Klee, the Swiss-born German artist whose individual style drew on expressionism, cubism and surrealism. The title suggests a place with a past, though the painting leaves you to find your own way into it. The work came to Tate through the bequest of Elly Kahnweiler in 1991, as part of the gift of Gustav and Elly Kahnweiler, and it was accessioned in 1994. Today it is among the Klee paintings held at Tate Modern.
On your wall: Its abstract character suits modern living rooms, studies and hallways, especially where you want a thoughtful piece that rewards a second glance.

Paul Klee was a Swiss-born German artist whose style was entirely his own. Over his career he drew on several movements, including expressionism, cubism and surrealism, and blended these influences into work that remains unmistakably his. For a Swiss customer, there is something pleasing in seeing a compatriot's imagination so distinctively at play.
