About this artwork

This still life by Augusto Giacometti dates from 1895 and takes a jug and a bowl as its subject, the kind of everyday objects painters have long used to explore form and arrangement. Giacometti was born in Stampa in the Grisons and became a prominent figure in Swiss Art Nouveau and Symbolism. He was also among the first painters to work in abstraction, and made his name in stained glass, murals and poster design. Seen alongside that later career, this early painting offers a calm, approachable starting point.

On your wall: A still life of simple household objects, it suits kitchens, dining rooms and quiet corners of a study or hallway where a modest, thoughtful picture is welcome.
