About this artwork

Childe Hassam shows his wife in a garden at Villiers-le-Bel. She is seated outdoors, and flowers, including geraniums, surround her, so the painting is part portrait and part garden scene. It belongs to Hassam's Impressionist work, and he was an American painter who helped introduce the style to collectors, dealers and museums in his own country. Here the subject is quiet and domestic: a woman at ease among plants, in the open air.

On your wall: It suits living rooms, bedrooms and reading corners, where its garden subject and the presence of flowers bring a calm, domestic warmth.
