About this artwork

This is a still life in the Impressionist manner. A woven basket sits on a table, filled with apples in red and green, while several loose apples lie beside it. The fruit is the whole subject, so the eye moves easily between the rounded shapes and their shifting colours. Monet signed and dated the work 1880. Though he is best known for landscapes painted outdoors, here he turns his attention to a simple arrangement of everyday things.

On your wall: The warm reds and fresh greens suit a kitchen, dining room or breakfast nook, and would also bring a quiet touch of colour to a hallway or reading corner.

About Claude Monet

Claude Monet was a French painter and a founder of Impressionism. He devoted his long career to expressing nature as he perceived it, working especially in outdoor landscape painting. The movement takes its name from his painting Impression, Sunrise, shown in 1874 at the First Impressionist Exhibition, which he helped initiate as an alternative to the Salon.
