This is a landscape painting made in 1897, with oil paint on canvas. Its subject is Mont Sainte-Victoire, the mountain named in the title, which gives the picture its focus. Paul Cézanne was a French painter whose work formed a bridge between late nineteenth-century Impressionism and the early twentieth-century Cubism that followed. Today the painting belongs to the collection of the Hermitage Museum. It rewards patient viewing, as a landscape in which the mountain and the land around it can be looked at again and again.
On your wall: A mountain landscape like this suits a calm living room, a study or a hallway, where it can bring a sense of open space to the wall.
