Painted in 1913, Surf, Isles of Shoals is a marine work by the American Impressionist Childe Hassam. It shows the rugged shoreline of New England, near Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where the sea meets the coast. Hassam worked in oil on canvas, and the painting belongs to the tradition of American Impressionism, a movement he helped introduce to collectors, dealers and museums in the United States. Coastal scenes were among the subjects he was known for. Today the painting is part of the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
