Kandinsky's Easter egg, made in 1926, is an abstract painting in an oval, egg-like shape. Against a dark brown ground, white crescent forms, circles and fine lines sit alongside a segmented wheel of colour and small chequered blocks. Each element has its own place, and the eye moves from one to the next without settling on a single subject. The title points to Easter, and the oval format echoes it. Kandinsky is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of abstraction in Western art.
On your wall: The dark brown ground and bright, geometric details suit a study, living room or hallway, especially where modern or minimal furnishings let the shapes stand out.
