Jules DuClos, 1865
A masonry viaduct caught mid-construction, its arches held up by timber, with a lone figure standing in the river below.

Jules DuClos photographed this railway viaduct while it was still being built, near Pont-de-Buis, where it crosses the Doufine River. Timbers support the arches, and a man stands in the water beneath them, which gives a sense of the structure's scale. Railway service from Paris was extended across Brittany in stages between 1840 and 1865, and bridges like this one were needed to carry it. The photograph is an albumen print made from a wet collodion negative.
On your wall: Its black and white tones and strong architectural lines suit studies, hallways, living rooms and offices, particularly in calm, understated schemes.
