Marsden Hartley, 1909
A dark mountain rises beneath swirling pale clouds, set behind broken trees and boulders in a painting by Marsden Hartley.

Painted in oil in 1909, this work gives its whole attention to a single mountain. The mass of the peak is dark and heavy, and pale clouds swirl above it in rounded, restless shapes. In the foreground, stylised broken trees and boulders frame the view and lead the eye up towards the summit. The palette is made up of greens, browns and cream tones. Marsden Hartley was an American Modernist painter, poet and essayist, and this is the second work to carry the title The Dark Mountain. It is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
On your wall: Its deep greens, browns and creams suit a study, living room or hallway where a calm, earthy landscape with plenty of presence is wanted.

Marsden Hartley was an American Modernist who worked as a painter, poet and essayist. He developed his skills as a painter by studying the work of Cubist artists in Paris and Berlin, and that experience shaped his approach to the canvas. His writing sat alongside his painting as part of a wide-ranging creative life.
