A mother and her young daughter hold still for the camera, the child standing on a chair with a bouquet in her hands.

This is a daguerreotype, the process most commercial photographers favoured for family portraits until the mid-1850s. A mother sits in a dark dress beside her daughter, who wears a striped dress and bonnet and stands on a wicker chair holding flowers. Both had to stay still while the silver-coated copper plate was exposed, and their patience shows. Only the bouquet is slightly blurred. Fabric, faces and accessories are crisply defined, as the technique tends to render them.
On your wall: Its soft monochrome tones and quiet family subject suit a hallway, bedroom or study, especially among vintage portraits or in a traditional setting.
