Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, 1831
Sunlight pours through the trees of Vienna's Prater, with every leaf painted in fine, careful detail.

This view of the Prater, a large public garden in Vienna, was painted in oil on a wood panel around 1831. A man sits beside a tree in the left foreground, while bright sunlight floods the park and lights a great number of trees. Their leaves are rendered with close attention. Waldmüller is celebrated for his portraits, yet he also painted observed landscapes, and he often went to the Prater to paint its majestic oaks. He valued truth to nature, drawn from looking directly at his subject, over idealised, moralising art.
On your wall: Its sunlit greenery and calm park setting suit living rooms, studies and hallways, especially where a quiet, natural view is welcome.

Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller was an Austrian painter, counted among the most significant artists of the Biedermeier period in Austria. His work belongs to that era and is closely tied to its character. Amelia's customers who enjoy Austrian art of the nineteenth century will find in his paintings a good place to begin.
