About this artwork

Ferdinand Hodler painted this landscape in oil on canvas around 1906. In the foreground, a meadow of green grass is dotted with flowers. Beyond it lies a broad stretch of lake, and further off, ranges of blue mountains rise under clouds that sweep across the sky in bands. The artist signed it F. Hodler in the lower right corner. Today it belongs to the Bavarian State Painting Collections and hangs in the Neue Pinakothek.

On your wall: Its fresh greens and cool blues suit living rooms, bedrooms and studies, and bring a quiet sense of open air to bright, calm interiors.

About Ferdinand Hodler

Ferdinand Hodler was a Swiss painter, counted among the best-known Swiss artists of the nineteenth century. He began with realistic portraits, landscapes and scenes of everyday life. Later he moved towards a personal form of Symbolism, which he called "parallelism". His work shows a clear shift from close observation to a more distinctive, individual style.
