Hodler painted this view of a forest stream near Champéry in 1916. The title points to a brook running through woodland, and the work belongs to his landscapes of the Swiss Alps, in which trees often take a leading role. Hodler began with realistic portraits, landscapes and genre scenes before developing a personal Symbolist approach that he called "parallelism". This painting comes from the later part of his career and shows his continuing attention to the Swiss countryside.
On your wall: Its woodland and mountain subject suits living rooms, studies and hallways where a calm, natural scene is welcome, especially alongside wood, stone or other earthy materials.
