Thomas Moran, 1885
A dark, quiet glade opens onto a sunlit hacienda and a distant lake, drawing the eye from shade into light.

Thomas Moran painted this view in 1885, setting a small pond and a seated figure within a dark, wooded glade. Beyond the trees, the scene opens out to a white building catching the sun, with palms nearby. Further off lies Lake Cuitzeo, where sailboats rest on the water and a mountain rises in the distance. The contrast between the shaded foreground and the bright background gives the landscape its sense of depth. It is painted in oil on panel and signed T. Moran 1885. Today it belongs to the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
On your wall: Its deep greens and sunlit whites suit a study, living room or hallway where a calm, richly shaded landscape can add depth.

Thomas Moran was an American painter and printmaker associated with the Hudson River School, working in New York. His landscapes often turned to the Rocky Mountains. He lived there with his wife, Mary Nimmo Moran, and their daughter Ruth, and shared a studio with his elder brother, the marine artist Edward Moran.
