Painted in 1879, this is an oil painting on canvas by the Swiss artist Ferdinand Hodler. The title tells us it shows the Aare canal at Thun, a landscape with water at its heart. It dates from the early part of Hodler's career, when he was working in a realistic style and painting portraits, landscapes and genre scenes. Those years came well before he developed the personal Symbolism he called "parallelism". It is a good chance to see a familiar Swiss name at an earlier, more observational stage.
On your wall: A calm waterside landscape like this suits a living room, study or hallway, especially where you want a quiet, natural note on the wall.
