This colour woodcut by Utagawa Hiroshige dates from 1857 and belongs to his series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. The title tells us where we are standing: at Massaki, looking towards the grove of Suijin Shrine, the Uchigawa Inlet and the village of Sekiya. It is a vertical composition, measuring 36.3 by 24.1 centimetres, and it shows Hiroshige's gift for turning a particular place into a calm, carefully framed scene. Hiroshige is regarded as the last great master of ukiyo-e.
On your wall: Its landscape subject suits a study, hallway or living room where a calm, considered Japanese view would sit well alongside natural materials and simple furnishings.

Utagawa Hiroshige, born Andō Tokutarō and also known as Andō Hiroshige, was a Japanese artist who worked in the ukiyo-e tradition. He is regarded as the last great master of that tradition, and his name remains closely tied to the form. His prints are a fine way to bring that heritage into a home.
