Northern Imperial Tombs is a Japanese woodblock print by Hiroshi Yoshida, dated 1937. It belongs to his Korea and Manchuria series, and its title points to a subject of imperial burial grounds in the north. The print is small in its original form, measuring about 24 by 37 centimetres, in a landscape format. Yoshida is known as a leading figure of the shin-hanga style and for his landscape prints, and this work sits within that body of travel-inspired imagery.
On your wall: Its calm, landscape format and historical subject suit a study, hallway or reading corner where a thoughtful, understated piece of Japanese art is welcome.

Hiroshi Yoshida was a Japanese painter and woodblock printmaker of the 20th century. He is counted, alongside Hasui Kawase, among the finest artists of the shin-hanga style, and is admired above all for his landscapes. He travelled widely, and became known for presenting subjects such as the Taj Mahal, the Swiss Alps and the Grand Canyon in traditional Japanese woodblock form.
