Edmond Bacot, 1862
A quiet 1862 portrait of a young girl resting on straw, one arm leaning on a basket, taken by Edmond Bacot in France.

Edmond Bacot photographed this young girl seated on straw, leaning on a basket, in 1862. It is an albumen print made from a wet collodion negative, two processes typical of French photography in the nineteenth century. Bacot took the picture, along with several others of the same girl, while visiting Victor Hugo. The novelist, a champion of the working classes, owned another print of this image as well as the related ones. At the time, painters of rural labour sometimes turned to photographs as models for their figures, which places this work within a wider interest in country life.
On your wall: Its soft monochrome tones and simple rural subject suit a study, reading nook, hallway or bedroom, especially alongside natural materials and muted colours.
