About this artwork

Gerrit van Honthorst shows the biblical story of Samson and Delilah as a candlelit night scene. Delilah, a young woman, cuts the hair of the sleeping Samson, whose back is bare. An old woman holds the candle and raises a finger to her lips, asking for silence. Samson's strength lay in his uncut hair, and the Philistines had bribed Delilah to find its source. By limiting the painting to three closely packed figures lit by one flame, Honthorst heightens the drama. The old woman's gesture also draws us in, almost as accomplices. It is an oil painting on canvas, made around 1616 in the Netherlands.

On your wall: Its dark, candlelit tones and intimate drama suit a study, library, dining room or quiet living space where a focal piece is wanted.
