About this artwork

This painting shows the raising of the Virgin Mary's body into heaven. It was the central image of El Greco's first major commission, an altarpiece for the convent church of Santo Domingo el Antiguo in Toledo. The church also served as the funerary monument of Doña Maria de Silva, so the whole commission turns on death and salvation. The composition is divided into two zones. Below, the apostles react with animated gestures and varied expressions, each so individual that they seem studied from living models. Above, calm and graceful angels turn their attention to Mary as she ascends. El Greco used broad, free brushwork, flickering hues and rich colour harmonies, fitting many figures into a tall, narrow format.

On your wall: Its tall, vertical format and rich colour suit a dignified space such as a study, library, staircase or formal living room, where it can draw the eye upward.

About El Greco

El Greco, born Doménikos Theotokópoulos, was a Greek painter, sculptor and architect who worked in the Spanish Renaissance. The name by which we know him began as a nickname. He usually signed his paintings with his full Greek name, often adding the word for "Cretan". He is regarded as one of the greatest artists of all time.
