About this artwork

This painting belongs to a decorative series of nine panels showing children at play in two of Paris's largest parks, the Tuileries Gardens and the Bois de Boulogne. Here, a girl hides behind a tree in a game of hide-and-seek. On the left, children run; on the right, women sit quietly on green chairs, and the contrast gives the scene its gentle rhythm. Vuillard did not aim for a realistic view. He arranged the picture in bands of colourful pattern, so that it reads rather like a tapestry. It was painted in 1894 in distemper on fabric.

On your wall: Its green, leafy park setting and patterned, decorative surface suit living rooms, hallways and children's rooms, or any space that welcomes a calm, textured landscape.

About Édouard Vuillard

Édouard Vuillard was a French painter, printmaker and decorative artist. From 1891 to 1900 he belonged to the Nabis, a avant-garde group, and made paintings built from areas of pure colour. His interiors, influenced by Japanese prints, play with flattened planes, pattern and form. Later he worked more realistically, and in the 1920s and 1930s painted portraits.
