Caillebotte painted this garden at Trouville-sur-Mer in 1882, working in oil on canvas. The subject is a garden, a quieter choice than the busy scenes some of his contemporaries favoured. Caillebotte was a member of the Impressionist group, yet he often painted in a more realistic manner than many of his fellow artists. He was also a patron of the Impressionists, supporting colleagues whose work he admired. This picture offers a look at his interest in everyday outdoor settings.
On your wall: With its garden subject, it suits living rooms, hallways and dining areas where a touch of the outdoors and a gentle, natural feel are welcome.

Gustave Caillebotte was a French painter and a member of the Impressionist group, though his style was more realistic than that of many of his peers. He took an early interest in photography as an art form. His family's wealth allowed him to support fellow Impressionists, and the collection of their works he bequeathed became central to the French Republic's holdings of Impressionism.
