About this artwork

William Merritt Chase painted this oil on canvas around 1893 at Shinnecock, on the eastern tip of Long Island, New York. It was here that he set up his own summer school, drawn to the low-lying dunes and beaches. He and his students were among the first American artists to paint outdoors. The picture is a wide, open view that glows with the light of a summer day, with varied brushwork and warm colours. It is counted among the finest works Chase made at Shinnecock. His school there ran from 1891 to 1902 and helped spread Impressionism across the United States.

On your wall: Its warm colours and open, sunlit landscape suit living rooms, hallways and bright studies, where it brings a feeling of summer light and space.
