Kazimir Malevich, 1916
A tilted rectangle rests across a red vertical beam, forming a cross-like shape on white. Simple, balanced and quietly striking.

Painted in 1916, this oil on canvas by Kazimir Malevich is built from just a few geometric forms. A large rectangle sits at an angle over a red vertical beam, creating a cross-like shape against a plain white ground. It belongs to Suprematism, the non-objective approach to painting that Malevich introduced in 1915.
On your wall: Its white ground and restrained red accent suit calm, uncluttered spaces such as living rooms, studies and hallways with plenty of wall to spare.
