This woodblock print by Mizuno Toshikata, made in ink and colour on paper in 1894, belongs to the series Thirty-six Elegant Selections. Each print in the series features a woman from a different time period, which suits an artist with an interest in history painting. Most of the prints are set in the Edo period. This one, titled The Fourth Month, A Lady of the Enkyō Era, shows one such woman. Toshikata worked in the Meiji period and was a favoured student of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, whose post as a newspaper illustrator he took over.
On your wall: A graceful figure study that would sit well in a study, bedroom, hallway or quiet living space, especially where Japanese prints or historical subjects are appreciated.
