About this artwork

This colour woodblock print by Ohara Koson shows the silhouette of a man and a horse standing in shallow water. A weeping willow and a crescent moon complete the scene. The print was made in Japan between 1900 and 1910 and published in Tokyo by Akiyama Buemon. It is printed on paper in a long, narrow format, which suits a quiet, horizontal composition. Koson was a designer of woodblock prints at the forefront of the shinsaku-hanga and shin-hanga movements.

On your wall: Its long, narrow shape and calm night scene suit a hallway, bedroom or study, or the space above a sofa or desk.
