Mizuno Toshikata made this woodblock print in 1894, during the Meiji period. It comes from the series Thirty-six Elegant Selections, in which each print shows a woman from a different period of history. That choice suits an artist with a taste for history painting. Most prints in the series are set in the Edo period, though this one looks back to the Genkō era. The title tells us she is out on the road. Toshikata was a favoured student of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi and took over his post as a newspaper illustrator. The print is made with ink and colour on paper.
On your wall: It would sit well in a study, hallway or sitting room, where a quiet figure study and a historical subject can be appreciated up close.
