A Puppet Made is a Japanese woodblock print of 1894, made in the Meiji period with ink and colour on paper. It comes from the series Thirty-six Elegant Selections, in which each print features a woman from a different period of history. That choice suits Mizuno Toshikata, an artist with a real interest in history painting. Most of the prints in the series are set in the Edo period, which ran from 1615 to 1868. Toshikata was a favoured student of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi and took over his post as a newspaper illustrator after Yoshitoshi's death in 1892.
On your wall: It would sit well in a study, a hallway or a quiet living room, particularly where Japanese prints or an interest in history already shape the space.
