This print is by Mizuno Toshikata and dates from 1894, in the Meiji period. It is a woodblock print, worked in ink and colour on paper. It belongs to the series Thirty-six Elegant Selections, in which each print presents a woman from a different time period. That approach suited an artist with an interest in history painting. Most of the prints in the series are set in the Edo period. Toshikata was a favoured student of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi and took over his post as a newspaper illustrator.
