About this artwork

Tangotee is an oil painting on canvas by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, dated to 1919 in our listing, though some sources give 1920. The title points to a tango tea, a social occasion with music and dancing, and Kirchner approaches such a subject in the expressive manner he was known for. He was a German painter and printmaker, and one of the founders of Die Brücke, the group that helped lay the foundations of Expressionism in the twentieth century. Here you can enjoy a work shaped by that tradition, where mood and rhythm matter as much as exact description.

On your wall: Suited to living rooms, dining areas and studies where an expressive, modern painting can bring a sense of social energy and movement to the space.

About Ernst Ludwig Kirchner

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner was a German Expressionist painter and printmaker. He was among the founders of Die Brücke, or "The Bridge", a group that helped lead the way to Expressionism in twentieth-century art. After a breakdown during the First World War he left army service. In 1937 the Nazis condemned his work as "degenerate", and over 600 pieces were sold or destroyed.
