About this artwork

Kirchner made this lithograph in 1908, during his first year of working with the process. He wanted it to be clear at a glance that a lithograph is not simply a drawing. So he applied lithographic wash all the way to the edges of the stone, cutting the composition off abruptly and letting the stone's uneven outline show through inked borders. The quickly drawn marks echo the weather and wind over the sea, and the visible character of the stone itself is part of the image. For Kirchner, this directness belonged to his search for truth in his art.

On your wall: Its energetic, abstract handling of the sea suits studies, living rooms and hallways where a modern, expressive piece can add movement.

About Ernst Ludwig Kirchner

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner was a German Expressionist painter and printmaker. He was among the founders of Die Brücke, or "The Bridge", a group that helped lead the way to Expressionism in twentieth-century art. After a breakdown during the First World War he left army service. In 1937 the Nazis condemned his work as "degenerate", and over 600 pieces were sold or destroyed.
