About this artwork

Made in Germany in 1912, this is a woodcut by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, in which, as the title tells us, a woman is putting on her shoes. The image is built from carved marks rather than soft shading, which gives an ordinary, private action a direct and angular character. Kirchner was a German Expressionist and a founder of the artists' group Die Brücke, and printmaking was an important part of his work. This print belongs to the collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art.

On your wall: Its graphic, hand-cut character suits a bedroom, dressing area or hallway, and sits comfortably in modern interiors that welcome expressive black-and-white or print-based art.

About Ernst Ludwig Kirchner

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner was a German Expressionist painter and printmaker. He was among the founders of Die Brücke, or "The Bridge", a group that helped lead the way to Expressionism in twentieth-century art. After a breakdown during the First World War he left army service. In 1937 the Nazis condemned his work as "degenerate", and over 600 pieces were sold or destroyed.
