Made in 1854 by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, this triptych of colour woodblock prints joins three sheets into one continuous scene of figures visiting Futamigaura Bay, near Ise Grand Shrine, one of Japan's most sacred places. In the background the sun rises between the Wedded Rocks, which are linked by a twisted rope called a shimenawa, used to mark a sanctified space. The rocks stand at the entrance to Futami Okitama Shrine and are said to embody Izanagi and Izanami, the gods who, according to myth, created Japan. Pilgrims came to Futamigaura to purify themselves before visiting Ise, and often stayed there afterwards.
On your wall: Its wide, panoramic coastal scene suits a living room, study or hallway, and sits comfortably in calm interiors that favour Japanese or nature-inspired decor.

Utagawa Kuniyoshi was a Japanese artist working in the ukiyo-e tradition, creating woodblock prints and paintings. He belonged to the Utagawa school and is counted among the last great masters of the style. His work stands as a late chapter in a celebrated Japanese tradition of printmaking and painting.
