Katsushika Hokusai, 1830/33
A giant wave curls high over the sea, while Mount Fuji sits small and calm in the distance. Hokusai made it when he was 70.

This colour woodblock print belongs to Hokusai's series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, which he began in 1830 at the age of 70. The series helped establish the lasting popularity of landscape prints. Mount Fuji appears in every scene, seen near and far, in different weather, seasons and directions. Here, a huge wave crests over the water while a diminutive Fuji lies in the distance beneath it. Hokusai made generous use of Berlin blue, a newly affordable pigment, for water and sky across the series. This is the best-known image from the set, and the impression in Chicago is a later one rather than the first state of the design.
On your wall: Its strong blues and dramatic sea suit living rooms, studies and hallways, and sit well in calm, minimal interiors where the wave can take centre stage.

Katsushika Hokusai was a Japanese painter and printmaker who worked in the ukiyo-e tradition during the Edo period. He helped widen the style beyond portraits of courtesans and actors to include landscapes, plants and animals. His series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, which includes The Great Wave off Kanagawa, influenced Van Gogh and Monet.
