About this artwork

Der Buchenwald, which translates as "The Beech Forest", is a landscape painted by Ferdinand Hodler in 1885. It is an oil painting on canvas, and the title tells us the subject: a woodland of beech trees. Hodler is among the best-known Swiss painters of the nineteenth century, and his earlier work often favoured a realistic approach, including landscapes like this one. The painting is held today at the Kunstmuseum Solothurn.

On your wall: A woodland scene like this suits living rooms, studies and hallways, especially where you want a calm, natural subject that sits well with wood and muted tones.
