About this artwork

Partie an der Rhone, which translates roughly as a stretch of the Rhone, is an oil painting on canvas by the Swiss painter Ferdinand Hodler, dated 1891. The title tells us the subject is a view along the river, so it belongs naturally among landscape works. Hodler is counted among the best-known Swiss painters of the nineteenth century, and this canvas shows his attention to a place in his own country's scenery. Today the painting is held at the Bündner Kunstmuseum.

On your wall: A river landscape like this suits a calm living room, a study or a hallway, where it can bring a sense of open scenery indoors.
