About this artwork

Painted in 1880, this oil on canvas shows villas at Villers-sur-Mer, a coastal town. Caillebotte was a French painter and a member of the Impressionist circle, though his approach was often more realistic than that of many of his fellow painters. He was also a patron to several of them, supporting their work thanks to his family's wealth. Here, the architecture of the seaside holiday setting takes centre stage, inviting you to look closely at the buildings and their surroundings.

On your wall: Its seaside architecture suits a living room, hallway or study, particularly where you enjoy landscapes with a calm, observational feel.

About Gustave Caillebotte

Gustave Caillebotte was a French painter and a member of the Impressionist group, though his style was more realistic than that of many of his peers. He took an early interest in photography as an art form. His family's wealth allowed him to support fellow Impressionists, and the collection of their works he bequeathed became central to the French Republic's holdings of Impressionism.
