A Parisian street seen from far above, where carriages and tiny figures move between tall buildings and a gilded statue catches the eye.

This 1878 cityscape looks down on rue Halévy in Paris from a great height. Rows of Haussmann-style buildings frame the boulevard, while the corner of the Opéra and its gilded statue appear in the view. Far below, small figures and carriages move along the street, which gives the scene a quiet sense of distance. Caillebotte painted it in oil on canvas. He was a member and patron of the Impressionists, though his manner was often more realistic than that of many in the group. The painting is now in the Museum Barberini, as part of the Hasso Plattner Collection.
On your wall: Its city view and measured, architectural composition suit a study, living room or hallway, particularly where a calm urban scene would add depth to the wall.

Gustave Caillebotte was a French painter and a member of the Impressionist group, though his style was more realistic than that of many of his peers. He took an early interest in photography as an art form. His family's wealth allowed him to support fellow Impressionists, and the collection of their works he bequeathed became central to the French Republic's holdings of Impressionism.
