Gustave Caillebotte, 1877
Two figures stride out of a rain-damp Paris intersection, while umbrellas and glistening cobblestones tell us the weather without a single raindrop.

Caillebotte painted this busy Paris intersection, not far from where he lived, in oil on canvas in 1877. It is his largest and most ambitious work. The dramatic cropping may owe something to photography, and the two central figures seem to walk straight towards us, their attention caught by something beyond the frame. Each figure in the background is carefully placed to give the feeling of a bustling street. Rather than painting raindrops, he suggests the weather through the newly available retractable umbrellas and subtle reflections on the wet cobblestones. It combines the Impressionist interest in modern city life with a more Realist technique.
On your wall: Its grand scale and quiet city atmosphere suit a living room, study or hallway, particularly where a confident, contemporary-minded view of urban life would be welcome.

Gustave Caillebotte was a French painter and a member of the Impressionist group, though his style was more realistic than that of many of his peers. He took an early interest in photography as an art form. His family's wealth allowed him to support fellow Impressionists, and the collection of their works he bequeathed became central to the French Republic's holdings of Impressionism.
